Beat Yorkshire 7-2, Beat to Lancashire 6-1, Beat Middlesex 7-2

The girls captained by Pippa Lane and Holly Richards, experienced such fine margins in their matches, as they finished 3rd in the group and stayed up. Losing a tight 5-4 to eventual runners up, Essex on the first day, was a tough start to the weekend. However, things got even tighter against Cheshire the next day as they lost an 11-9 and 13-11 match tie-break in the doubles, losing the tie 6-3, which could have quite easily been a 5-4 win. On the last day, the girls finished up with a comprehensive 7-2 win over Somerset.

The boys captained by Max Robinson and Tom Jarvis, kicked off their weekend by defeating Yorkshire 7-2, followed up with an impressive 7-2 win over the eventual runners up, Middlesex on Saturday and rounded off their title winning campaign by taking an unassailable 6-1 lead over Lancashire on Sunday. The boys were absolutely ruthless in their complete domination over the weekend.

A good start to the LTA County Cup 2022 for the Kent juniors, with a national title in the bag already. We hope for more silverware over the course of the coming months.

14U County Cup 2022
Qualifying – Saturday 30 April and Sunday 1 May 2022

Kent fielded two relatively young teams, with the majority being made up of 13Us. Both teams finished runner up, but that is only part of the story, I’m not sure I’ve seen two Kent teams get so close to winning and qualifying for the finals.

The younger boys’ team were always going to be up against it versus an older Welsh side, they forced the match to a deciding shoot-out, but unfortunately went down 10-4, missing out by the smallest of margins. I say the smallest of margins, somehow the girls got even closer!  When coaches say every point, game and set in county cup matters, it could not be more applicable to this moment. As Sussex had beaten Dorset on Saturday, it gave the girls a chance to qualify on a mathematical count back, an opportunity that they may not have ordinarily got. They lost to Dorset 4-2, finishing in a tie for matches won, a tie for sets won and the identical game winning %. The only difference between the team was the head-to-head!!

Heartbreak for both teams and the captains, but no doubt they will both be back next year and will not only be contenders to qualify, but at the finals too.

Qualifying – Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 September 2022

The boys opened against the eventual winners of the group, Sussex and lost 5-1, the boys responded well in their next match and beat Dorset 5-1. On Sunday the boys opened with a 5-1 loss to Hampshire & IOW, before going down 4-2 to South Wales. Both Dom and Will, felt that the boys gave their best all weekend and whilst they finished fourth, it could so easily have been higher.

The girls opened with the tightest match of the weekend, as they fought hard to win 100% of their three set matches and force a deciding doubles after a 3-3 draw. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, the girls lost the championship tie-break and with it the tie. They followed up the disappointment of the narrow loss, by dispatching Gloucestershire 6-0, before beating Sussex 5-1 in the 3rd/4th play off match.

The weekend of the 20th March saw the start of the 9U county cup regional qualifying event at the NTC. The boys carried on from where they left off last year, by cruising through the event with comfortable wins over Middlesex, Essex and Sussex. They now once again qualify for the National Finals (South) and will be looking to retain the title won last year.

The girls put in a gallant display to finish runner up to a very strong Middlesex team, who will be clear favorites at the National Finals. They won a crunch match with Essex 4-2 in the opening round, which secured them the chance to finish 2nd. They followed this up with a loss to Middlesex and a win against Sussex.

The 8Us is a new event that will run in October, however the LTA were keen to trial the event in March with any counties wishing to do so. Along with the other London and SE counties, we hosted such an event at BTC on Saturday 11th March.

Each county selected a team of 4 boys and 4 girls to play in separate events, that ran at the same time. Eight courts for 3hrs of continuous tennis, singles and doubles for these young children starting out on their tennis journey. The day was expertly run by Luke House and Jonathan Dawes, with all children having a great time playing alongside their friends.
